The grip is the base tape that comes pre-installed on the racket, while the overgrip is placed on top to improve grip and absorption. Visually, the main difference is that the overgrip is usually thinner, as it allows you to adjust the handle thickness according to your preferences. Additionally, the grip has adhesive along its entire length, whereas the overgrip only has adhesive at one end to secure it when you start wrapping it.

The overgrip is applied starting from the bottom of the racket handle and wrapping it upward in a spiral, maintaining a light and consistent tension. It’s important not to overstretch it in order to preserve its absorption and grip. Each turn should slightly overlap the previous one to achieve a uniform and comfortable finish.

In every Samo Grip box, we include a step-by-step guide to help you apply the overgrip correctly and get the best grip from your very first match.

If you play 2–3 times per week, it’s normal to change your overgrip every 3–5 matches.

If you sweat a lot or compete regularly, you may need to replace it sooner.

A worn overgrip loses grip and absorption.

White overgrips make it easy: when they get dirty and darken, you can clearly see it’s time to change it.

The choice between a perforated or smooth overgrip depends on your feel preferences and your level of sweating.

In 80% of cases, we recommend a smooth overgrip, as it provides a more uniform feel and more consistent grip.

In situations with heavy sweating or high humidity, a perforated overgrip may work better, as it helps channel sweat toward the base grip and maintain a drier feel during play.
